The recurring formula in throughout the book of judges is that the Israelites would do something sinful, they would beg to be forgiven, and then someone would be delivered to save them. This was a sin to salvation cycle. The authors of the seventh and sixth century BCE wrote stories like those in judges, because they were showing how the Israelites were rebellious and how they didn’t listen to God, but yet they would beg for is help when they need it. A lot of this is going on today, people do some very sinful things and then they beg God for his forgiveness over and over again. A lot of people that believe in God know that he is a very forgiving God, but I think that there is only so much forgiving that he is going to do. But people think that if they just keep doing what they want and then asking God to forgive them then all will be forgotten and forgiven, but I don’t think that’s true. There are archeological records that confirm the conquest in the book of Judges and not Joshua. The stories were first poems and songs and then they were translated into stories. The three parts that the idea of “Divine Election” are: the election of those chosen to be disciples, the election of Jesus, and the election of the Israelites.
