MY PROJECT
106 words by pgordon
The purpose of my project is to try to remedy the issue of poverty and starvation. The first part of my project is to gather volunteers and go out into the community and make people aware of this problem and what we plan to do to help. Next, we fund raise so that we can get monetary backing for going out in the community to personally help those who need food and/or shelter. Finally, i hope to get some or at least one person able to get employment so that they can have the means and confidence to get back on their own two feet

OK project. You should start by finding an organization here that already does this, and you can then ask what you can do to help them. You might try ACORN, or one of the many affordible housing groups.

This is definitely a big problem in the New Orleans area, especially post-Katrina. An organization that I have experience with is Second Harvesters Food Bank. They are always looking for volunteers to help sort and box food for distribution. Anyone over 10 years of age can go volunteer there. In the past, our Cub Scout group has conducted food drives for non-perishables that can be taken to Second Harvesters. We have had the boys bring items from home and distribute flyers asking other people in the neighborhood to bring donations. Also, they have had events like Bingo nights where the admission is a couple of canned goods. I hope these suggestions are helpful to you because I think your project sounds like a wonderful idea that will really benefit the community.

You can work with the social service to help people become financially stable. My mom used to work for them and have helped many families to become financially stable. She often sees them around, and they are very grateful for all she has done. Therefore, I believe you will have many positive feedback.

Hey Paul, this project sounds like a great idea. Going out into the community can be one of the most difficult types of service because you never know the responses you will receive. But, if you reach at least one person then your efforts are not in vain. The issue of poverty in New Orleans has always been a BIG one, and after the hurricane povery is even worse. People who had homes in the past are now homeless. Though your project is on a big scale, it definitely has potential to be great if you are dedicated and willing (and have a good team, of course!) to help those who cannot help themselves. Also, your idea to help one person get employment is awesome! You just don’t know how you could change someone’s life if you can accomplish this. Good luck and let me know if you need anything =)

I think this a good idea Paul. I would try and find a specific organization to help you with your cause. Also, I would try and get together with local helping centers, like shelters, to bring awareness to the community. Your idea of employing at least one person is a good idea, and maybe it could turn into more that can find jobs.

Poverty is a BIG problem so this project seems just fine. However, you should try to work on with one specific organization so that you can put all your effort into one things rather than putting a little of yourself into many things. Volunteering at homeless shelters could be a good way to start. Then at that homeless shelter start up a program to help at least one or two people find employment. By starting the program there it keeps it going even when you are gone…

You can raise money and visit the local shelters for women and children or the homeless. The people at these shelters are always in need of food, clothes, hygiene products, etc. The only problem is you never know what is back up and running since the hurricane. But maybe you know of a place where you can go and help out. And it will be a nice idea to help others find employment.

That would be a good idea to visit some of the shelters for women and children and for the homeless. The people there are always in need of food, clothes, hygiene products, etc. The problem is that many places may not be up and running since the hurricane. But maybe you already know of a place to go.

This project is a good idea, especially in New Orleans. There shouldn’t be too many problems gathering people and resources and going out into the community. Your idea of getting at least one person a job is great because maybe that person will turn around and try to help other people do the same. Then, the project will go on for a long time.

Thanks for your comment Paul. Its true that many women health diseases are prominent in the African-American community. At the center’s website their is a link that is especially for younger girls. It talks about all the changes they should be experiencing and some of the health issues that they will be prone to when they get older. I think this will greatly influence the younger generation’s knowledge about health and their body.

Poverty and starvation is a big problem in our society today. Finding shelter or a home for homeless people is a good thing to do. Not to many people care about these problems. These problems are overlooked most of the time. I think this is a fantastic project and hopefully you do succeed on it. Helping people finding a job is a good thing to do. Good luck on this mission!

Poverty is a major problem in the United States today. Social, economical, political, and cultural factors all contribute to poverty. Education and economic development are two major issues that will help prevent poverty. The United States Census Bureau defines poverty as an “economic condition in which people lack sufficient income to obtain basic needs for food, housing, clothing, health services and education.” In other words, poverty is powerlessness, a lack of representation and freedom. Poverty is an issue that the world faces everyday.
Millions of children under age three who are poor face a greater likelihood of impaired development because of their increased exposure to a number of factors associated with poverty. These risk factors include:
inadequate nutrition
environmental toxins
diminished interaction due to maternal depression
trauma and abuse
lower quality child care
parental substance abuse
So… Paul… Do you plan on tackling one or more of the issues above in dept? If so, do you plan on beginning a major organization in your immediate future?

Poverty is definitely a problem in New Orleans, especially after Katrina. I think your heart is in the right place for this project. Even if you can help just one person, it would all be worth it. In the meantime, it would help if you volunteered in a homeless shelter or worked with an already established organization. I mean, getting the word out to the people of New Orleans is the most difficult part. But as long as you and your team members are dedicated to helping solve the problem, this project will go a long way.

This project is a good idea. There are too many people not just in New Orleans that are starving, but all over the world. So going out in the community and speaking out about this issue because I believe everyone knows about this issue, but know one cares enough to do something about is a good start. When I was younger my family and I used to go every Saturday and feed the homeless. My grandmother would cook hot food for them and we would pass it out. It was not very expensive. We would all pitch in some money for the groceries and cook it and then pass it out. The looks on those people’s faces was very pleasing. I’m not saying that you should try to do that, but maybe you can form a group who does something such as maybe volunteer to help build a shelter or raise money to build a shelter for the homeless.
