In the world today, there are a lot of problems that need to be addressed in today’s world. These problems can range the war in Iraq to problems in society years from now. There are three major problems in the world that are affecting people presently and in the future. The three biggest problems that I believe that are affecting the world the most are poverty, the environment, and the lack of positive role models for the youth. Poverty is an epidemic that is present everywhere in the world. According to Global Issues, “poverty is the state for the majority of the world’s people and nations.” The decisions made in the world are determined and influenced by the rich and powerful and the impoverished are forgotten or ignored. Another problem in the world is with the environment. The EPA states that, “There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases – primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The heat-trapping property of these gases is undisputed although uncertainties exist about exactly how earth’s climate responds to them.” I think the third biggest problem in the world is the lack of positive influences in poor communities. Without that, society is will not progress and society be stagnant. “Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.” The lack of quality role models leads to a decline in school activity and crime and also is a contributor to poverty.
Global policies, decisions, and practices are determined and influenced or made by the rich and powerful. With this being said, the governments of the poor countries are subject to these decisions and policies and their people are left powerless (Global Issues). In order to develop and open economies to poor nations are also forced to lower wages, standards, and their price for resources to attract investments. This leads to a more poverty because the nations can’t profit from their own resources. Nations from all over the world suffer from economic inequality. Anup Shah, states that “Inequality is increasing around the world while the world appears to globalize.” This means that the more developed and powerful nations take advantage of weaker nations as they globalize in trade.
The environment has gotten worse since througout the century due to pollution. Toxic and cancerous chemicals are being inhaled everyday and millions of pounds of these chemicals are emitted into the air every year by motor vehicles. The ozone layer is being depleted by hydrocarbons that are emitted by vehicles, industrial facilities, and other structures such as gas stations. Water from various sources such as rain, storm drains, and ditches flow directly to streams and bays. This is a problem because they go untreated. Also, small amounts of contaminants add up and pollute water. Global warming is also an issue because of pollution. More heat can cause serious health problems. Global warming plays a major role in extreme weather such as hurricanes. The economy is also affected by global warming. Coastal businesses and sking businesses suffer because of the extra heat. At this rate the earth will flood due to the melting of the polar ice caps. The heat caused by global warming is a bigger issue than most people think. My third largest problem is the future of the world’s youth. There are a lot of young children who are not blessed with loving families. These children are often forgotten or just swept under the rug. These forgotten children have a dramatically lower chance of being successful adults in the world without proper guidance and leadership. These children are at a higher risk of using dangerous drugs, contracting disease from unprotected sex, and violent crimes. Granted, there are volunteer programs and mentoring organiztions such as the Big Brother Big Sister program, there are never enough volunteers to be that special person for these younger generations. The state of the world is not looking good due to war, government corruption, drugs, and struggling economies. In order for tomorrow’s leaders to be ready to take on these problems and solve them, they need the proper leadership and guidance of responsible adults. For my project, I chose to help do something about this. I see myself as a good role model for youth and I plan on giving back to the community by sharing my previous expiriences and utilizing my leadership qualities. I am participating in the Men on the Move program here at Xavier University. We will be volunteering our services at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. We will be tutoring, assisting in the personal development of young men, and overall being excellent role models for these students. I feel that I’ve been fortunate to have loving parents and good role models througout my life and I believe that everyone should have the same equal opportunities in life. Although this problem does not really have to much in common with my field of study, I still feel that in the future I will still be doing something like this. In the past I have mentored and watched over people younger than me and I have enjoyed every minute of it.
I understand this course’s plagerism policy. There is no such thing as “The Bible” because there are a lot of different meanings to different people. Essentially, “The Bible” is a collection of books and each religion chooses which books to include in their own repsective faiths. The alphabet played an instrumental role in the transition from oral language to written language. Civilization was democratized because the alphabet created the ability to express ideas into words. Therefore, the alphabet freezes thought by enabling people to be able to read and share the ideas.
