Week 12 More project

Well my project is still moving along slowly. I begin to print up flyers to pass out in my neigborhood to get the people more involved on a street to street basis. I think this will help along with the meetings because not many people actually attend the meeting. I would say about maybe 1/6 of the neighborhood actually attend the meeting. I also am thinking about printing up informant letters to update these people on the progess and what issues that are being addressed, so that even if they don’t attend the meeting they can know what is going on. I will actually attend another neigborhood meeting next thursday. I plan to speak up this time, since last time I basically observed. I did this mainly to get an idea of what matters were already being discussed and to see how the leaders were responding to this concern. A lot of what was talked about were many concerns and issues that I wanted to bring up, but I did notice that although these concerns were brought up I didn’t hear any definite response or enough reassurance that these issues were going to be looked into immediately. So, this time when I go to the meeting I will bring up some of these same issues, to make sure the city leaders don’t forget about these problems and also let them know that we as the community have not forgotten about these problems as well. I plan to push the issue until something is done. Also this time when I attend the meeting I will also bring a few of my friends who said they would come with me, to show that not just the older generation is concerned, but also the younger generation is concerned as well. I think seeing the younger community getting involved will show the leaders that not only the parents want to make the world a better place, but also the children of those parents want to make it a better place as well. If we show them that we are willing to take a stand together, since many people see the world divided between the young and old, I think we will get a better response out of the officials that are in charge. As for the community center, I will try to conduct several fundraisers to get this started. I’m not going to begin the fundraising until after this semester ends. I really want to focus on the crime issue. To address the poverty issue, I plan on going and feed the homeless, once a week during the weekends, like my family and I did a long time ago. This want stop all of the poverty in the world but it will be a start. I probably will start this during break as well.
As I stated at the beginning of this semester, I know this project is going to take a lot of time and will continue after this semester, but that is what is going to have to be done in order to make the world a better place. We definitely can not forget about the problems and just hope they go away because they will not. They will only get worse, which is a day I don’t believe anyone would want to see.
Jesus was counter cultural because he was against the culture of the world. His primary focus was to get everybody to accept him which meant accepting his father. This all goes back to Adam and Eve. If Adam and Eve would never have eaten from the tree of knowledge the only culture known to us to this day would be that of the Kingdom (Heaven), but since that was done evil became apart of the world, which lead to different cultures of the world that begin to exclude Jesus and God. They begin to believe in Satan or some might say worship Satan by doing things that were not God-like. Because of this God sent his only begotten son Jesus to save the world to die for all of our sins so that we may live again and have eternal life. Jesus appeared human-like because he was but by him being the son of God he was pure, and God sent him to disrupt the cultures of the world and to get the people to focus on getting to heaven, where the treasure is plentiful and much better than what the treasures appear to be here on earth. So, it is for this reason that Jesus was counter cultural. In my opinion I don’t look at it as much as Jesus being counter cultural but more as if he was trying to save us from a life of pain and despair, because he knew that was what the culture or the way of the world would lead to.
I think my project is in someway counter cultural because it seems that crime, poverty and others things have become the way of the world. It seems that we have become to accept and not care to do much about it. When we turn on the television we expect to see some sort of violence has happen, if not we seem to be shocked. Especially in the city of New Orleans. Not a day goes by that we don’t hear of crime corruption or poverty. These problems have definitely become more visible since Katrina and during Katrina. All of the poor people left behind during the storm, and those of them who resorted to violence to tried to save themselves and many other things.Basically I believe my project is counter cultural because I’m speaking against these things that have seem to become apart of today’s culture, or at least accepted by our society. I’m speaking out against these things because I also know like Jesus that the way this world is going will definitely lead to disaster. Its like the bible says the wages of sin is death. I’m not saying that I was sent to save the world but if we all do a little it will be a lot in the long run and the world would definitely be a better place after all.
I know we are supposed to post a picture Dr. Homan but its not working, so I will try to post it again later.

Thanks for commenting on my project, as you are one of the very few that did. So far I have converted about three people into prospective college students. What you wrote was so very true. A lot of people believe that a weakness in one subject, especially something like math ( which I encountered a lot by the way), can keep them from attending a university or somehow make a college degree impossible. This is a common misconception because college is about so many other things. Although math and science is important, they do not completely rule the world. There are other lucrative fields and careers that don’t require hours of advanced math or microbiology. Thanks again for your comment. It was really helpful.
