My hurricane story I guess in a way is pretty typical from what most displaced students went through but I won’t mind sharing my story for another time. I was born and raised in New Orleans but just recently moved to LaPlace (30 to 45 minutes away) going on six years ago. Being a New Orleanian (Dr. Homan you should know) we usually believe most times that the storm will pass the city and most of us can ride it out. Well this was the mentality of my parents, and grandmother, but this time it was very different. My sister and I were really trying to get our parents to leave but they just constantly kept telling us that the storm wasn’t coming our way and if we wanted to leave we could. In those words my sister left with her friends for Houston and later attended University of Houston. As for me I went to Baton Rouge, with some of my friends, later that night two days before the storm in certainty that I were returning back 2 school the next day. With that in mind we all started to do our homework. The next day the storm hit and hours later the city was filled with water. I think for a couple of hours I went into a state of shock and knowing that things will never be the same. The most important thing me and a lot of people had to figure out was what we should do next. I had no clue all of this would happen, that everything would take so long, and really couldn’t believe the images on TV, and just for one moment I felt like a “Refugee”. Living off of text messages, not knowing if you’ll have a place to stay or food to eat but luckily there were some places of refuge. At that point I decided that I was going to attend LSU for the time being. Everything was all good and I felt a little bit better because some of my friends and boyfriend were there but you can just see the devastation all over their faces. In the beginning it felt as though a huge weight was lifted off of my chest but then I started to read the campus and local newspapers about the percentage of black students on a rising and how some people felt about it. I’ve kept every newspaper and to tell you the truth no one wanted us there. I even entered the music program there and had one of the professors who wanted to fail me on purpose and to have me start the music program from scratch. On a lighter note I joined organizations met a lot of new people, attended some great parties, and concerts on the field. It was an experience I’ll never forget. Luckily my house was not badly damaged and I’m very grateful for that.
Changing the subject the class so far is not what I expected at all. I’m not saying it’s a bad, because I love the class, but I thought that this class would be only about the bible point blank that’s it. I’m taking this class because it’s a requirement and because I would like to know more about the bible in general. I didn’t always grow up with the bible at my bed side but of course I know the main stories and characters. I was Baptist for only a years as a child and my dad changed my religion and eating habits in a blink of an eye.
As far as what I want to do for my professional vocation I’m a vocal music major so my life’s dream is to become a successful recording artist. My second choice
