week 3 WHAT I’M GOING TO DO FOR MY PROJECT!

92 words by htran10

What I can do to help the hunger? I can start a can food drive on our Xavier campus and post signs and balloons up to get student attention for contributions and donations. The sign will say “help the hunger and the homeless, bring all the can foods you have! ANYTHING WILL BE OF HELP. I will put a box in some of the building and have signs posted on top for contribution to the hunger. At the end of each week I will send the can foods to the hunger.

Henry, this is a good idea. I think that you could get a little more involved by at least going to the Food bank or something of that nature to also help sort and distribute food along with collecting can goods from the faculty and students. This would be a great way to stop hunger especially in New Orleans and surrounding areas. Just to put an idea out there what about serving a hot meal at least once or twice a month at a local shelter.

This is a good idea but it will take more work than just sitting boxes in buildings. When you give food for others you have to inspect it to make sure it is not opened, damaged, or expired. Even though it is good to give to others no one should use this as a way to clean out their pentry. It will take time to sort through the foods and you should specify non-perishable items (this prevents people donating foods that will spoil). I also think that you should go through the New Orleans Food Depository because they know the proper steps to handling the project.

Great idea! I think that this is a wonderful project. However, I think that you might want to consider giving out an award to the 2 people who supply the most can goods just to catch everyone’s attention. You can also set out a table w/ boxes infront of the U.C. for a week informing people about the food drive b/c majority of the times, students are always in a rush and they do not take the time-out to read flyers.

This is a good idea for a great cause. Placing drop boxes around campus is a great, convenient way to gain support. But maybe there are other ways to collect or to bring awareness to your cause, such as including other organizations on campus. You can also try to make it city wide by including high schools and middle schools.

Hey Henry, this is a good idea. Trying to help the less fortunate is always a good gesture. Canned food is a good start in helping others. Maybe you can volunteer at a shelter or food bank and help serve food. With Easter a few months away, collecting none perishable canned food and donating them to different organizations who dispense food during holiday’s is a great way to serve the community and start to resolve the problem that you have chosen… Good luck!

That is a really good idea. Hunger is a really big problem around the world. Whatever help people can receive is appreciated. You can also ask certain grocery stores if you can set up there. This would allow more people to be aware of what you are trying to do and probably increase the amount of can foods you have each week.

I think this a good idea. I have an idea that will help you receive more food items. You could talk to some of the administrators here at Xavier and try to turn the food drive into a competition between classes (09 would win of course, ha ha) or you could even try to make it an interschool competition (Xavier, Loyola, Dillard, Tulane). Nothing motivates people more than competition.

I think your project has good intentions but I have seen the can drives on campus and they do not look very successful. I know from the people I have spoken to, they do not have the funds to donate can foods. Therefore, I think a new innovative way to help feed the hungry is in order, not to put that burden on your shoulders but I think you should find another interactive way to feed the hungry.

Dude, that sounds like a plan. It sounds like a good idea to start a canned food drive to prevent the hunger of thousands of human beings. Hopefully your drive will motivate students to contribute their canned goods so that others will not starve. I admire the fact you have not forgotten about those who may not be as fortunate as us.

Great concept. Its obvious that people are living day to day without getting the nutrition their bodies need to function properly. Your project should be very effective. How are you going to make sure that the goods get to those in need?

Putting boxes in each dormitory as well as the other main buildings on campus ( the UC, the Library etc) will add convenience and will allow you to get more donations. Students will be more willing to donate if they feel they don’t have to go out of their way. Also, doing weekly pickups is great. Good idea.

I think this is a good idea, your project is very similar to mine. I did not plan on doing something at Xavier though. I think that everyone deserves to have a hot meal on their tables every single day. Its amazing how we take having food on the table for granted. We often times through good food away that someone would love to eat. I think its great that you are taking the step to motivate Xavier students to help fight against hunger by making donations. I was planning to conduct the donation aspect of my project at my church. I think your project will be very successful because we have many students who are willing to give.

I think this is a good idea. Henry, I’m not sure if you are aware of Second Harvesters which is a program in New Orleans that receives donations of food and they box the food and make sure that it is in good condition to distribute. I think that you should do a food drive here on campus and take the food raised to Second Harvesters and possible set up a day to help the separate and box the food that will be delivered to the families in New Orleans. Perhaps you can possiby help with some deliverys. You can always go up to the Volunteer Services office in the UC and get some information about Second Harvesters. I know for a fact they are always looking for volunteers. Maybe you can rally up a few friends and go on a weekend. You can make it into a competition and do a weigh in for all the boxes that were completed.

In response to your comment on my project:

Thank you for your concern in my project. Throughout the semester, I hope to have your support and I would like if you encourage your friends to support me as well.

  14. Eboni Evans Says:

Henry you bring up a valid point. How can students aspire to go to college when they can’t even get out of high school? This problem is the reason that “Mission Mentor” will impress upon students the joy that students should receive from high school. We will show them the value of a good educational foundation and how that foundation has helped in our lives. Good point Henry. Thanks!

  15. Gabbey Says:

Thanks and I agree totally with you that New Orleans is in dire need of a recycling program. I have thought of including the whole campus in my project but I wanted to start the implementation from home first. I want to make sure I have everything in place, and then expand. I think that indeed this projected some hoe spawned from me living here in New Orleans and seeing the streets as they are. Especially since the hurricane, I think there is so much we should reuse because it seems that all of our resources one by one are disappearing. They do already have clubs on campus that clean up around the community, so I am putting deep thought into asking for their help in making it a personal initiative.

Great Idea. I’m an RA in St. Martin DePorres dorm. You should come by and get permission from our director to set up a table in the lobby of the dorm. I know you’ll get a lot of student involvement. I wish your project a lot of success!
