Project:
My project against poverty from lack of education is assemblies and volunteering. I plan to have assemblies at different middle and high schools around the community showing the importance of education. I hope to show them the importance of education by showing them statistics on workers having a diploma, college and high school, and statistics on those without, by encouraging them to think about their future and what they want to do, and by showing them that there are people who believe in them. I plan to volunteer at after school tutoring centers to help little kids with their homework and to show them how learning will help them do whatever it is that they want to do in the future. By showing them that they are smart, that they can do it, and that there are people who believe in them will give them the confidence and belief that they can do or be whatever they want which will lead them to a better life, a life of financial stability.

Assemblies:
These past few weeks, I have been preparing for my assemblies. First, I asked my two former bosses, who are or were teachers, for their help and input. I have done my research on dropout statistics as well as their success rates and have compared it to those who had an education and their success rates. I want to finish all of my research and kind of put everything in its place, to know for sure how I will go about doing this, before I go to each school to introduce my plan. I also want to have people who have been through this, the dropout and the graduate, to talk to these kids.

Tutoring:
Tutoring has been fun. I have been tutoring elementary school kids. These kids go to Einstein Charter School, Lake Castle Private School, and Resurrection of Our Lord. I really enjoy helping these kids understand what they are learning. It is somewhat hard and frustrating when they are frustrated with themselves and are being bratty, but when they get it, they are so happy. I have tried to read to some second graders, but found that they would rather read to me. The first graders that I am tutoring are learning to read now, so they read to me too. I really like that they want to show off to me their skills. I do not mind as long as they are reading and are learning. Everyday that I am there, the head tutor always pushes the importance of education and learning. These kids know that they have to learn to succeed. I have not asked these kids what they want to do when they grow up. There are so many kids there that need help with their homework that there really has not been time to ask them any questions. However, just by being with them and helping them, I can see that they want to learn and understand. They just need the extra help.

Introduction to Biblical Studies and My Professional Living

To be honest, I have never thought about how this class would pertain to my professional living. I do not really think about that. I think about the now. The farthest I go is to think about the end of the semester. However, now that I am asked this question, I have to be honest and answer that I am now sure but will try to answer.

From just my project, I think I have learned to be more patient, helpful, and understanding. My professional goal is to be a pharmacist. I think that if I were to work as a retail pharmacist, I have to be patient, helpful, and understanding. Dealing with kids will help me be better at these qualities, I hope.

My project has kind of opened my eyes to the world around me. I mean, I knew that there were major problems in the world, such as poverty and so on, but, honestly, I really did not think about it. I know a little more about the world around me now. I hope to be more involved in everything now and hopefully in the future as well. I hope that when I am a pharmacist, I will be more worldly. I think it will help me understand the people or patients around me more.

In this class, when studying the bible or writings of biblical times, I have learned to not believe everything I read is the absolute truth. I should really apply this to what I hear. I always believe what people tell me. Later, when I think about it and realize how ridiculous or impossible it sounds, then I will believe otherwise. I should learn to stop doing that. I think that this will help me in the future. Also in studying the bible, I think that it is teaching me morality. Morality is a big issue in medicine. This will really help me in the future also.

Feminist Criticism

Feminist Criticism is useful in several ways. It really makes you wonder why women were not a bigger part of the Bible. There really were not many women’s point of views from what we have read so far in the Bible. We have matriarchs in the Bible, yet we do not really know anything about them except who their fathers, husbands, and sons are. The same goes for all the other women of the Bible. In my opinion, we only see, or rather read about the bad things that the women of the Bible do. Eve gave Adam the forbidden fruit. Rebekah helped Jacob steal his brother’s birthright and blessing. Rachel stole from her father. I think, from what we have read so far, I have only read about one story of how women were put in a favorable light. A woman saved her people from death.

Reading the article on feminist criticism really helped me see how women were portrayed in the Bible. Women were always subordinate to men. About all of the stories were written by men. Men used the Bible to mistreat women. It makes you wonder where the women’s point of view is, why it was this way, and how it would be different. I think that a woman’s perspective and reading about her experiences are just as important as men’s are.
