In Response to those that commented on my project….Your comments, criticism, and suggestions were all appreciated and taken into account. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider my ideas.
Kimberly Granvel: I will have volunteers to help me set up the workshops. I am still considering whether the workshops will be beneficial and realistic with the times and resources that I do have. I also think that racism and discrimination go hand in hand. So I will be discussing instances where both have occurred and I will also offer suggestions on how I believe I can make the two better.
Jada Etienne: Thank you very much for the suggestion. I also agree that racism is very much alive in our society. If you read my week 2 blog I discussed a recent incident I encountered with racism. People have brushed racism under the rug and try to pretend that it is not there. But it is our responsibility to address this problem and do something to change our world around, not only for ourselves but for those who will come after us. We have made major strides towards the direction of a racism free world but we still have a very long way to go. I think the experiment will be very useful in my project and I will look into it further.
The True Gleaner: Well, I would have to disagree. I can say with confidence that anyone will be drawn to a party with free food, good music, and good fun. These are all the things I plan to have at my multicultural celebration. This will include food from different cultures and also music. People will be drawn to the event because it is something different and interesting. And I will limit the children’s contest to drawing. I feel that there are many creative things that they can do with a pencil and paper if they let their minds explore.
Holle: I plan to start my project off small. I don’t anticipate that I will conquer racism in the entire New Orleans area but if I start small I feel that I will have better results and make more of an impact.
Christian Cade: Thank you for your comments. I do plan to talk about more than just racism but that will be the core of my presentations. I plan to discuss not only racism and what it means but also ways to prevent racism and how to deal with racism if you encounter it.
SonKim: Thanks for the idea of speaking with the different clubs. I could maybe incorporate that into my project but the idea is to bring the different cultures together in one place rather than talk to them separately. I think if the clubs were to attend the workshop it will be better for them to grasp the material and not be bias in their judgments because they are not just around people that are like them.
Khanphucius: I also agree that racism is a major issue and that’s why I chose it as my project. I hope that you will support my efforts.
Stephen: Your example about the rabbits is very true. I do think that at first it will be hard for groups to break their cultural chains but I will plan games and icebreakers that will aid in helping the situation. The idea is to start getting people to think outside of the box and break the ethnocentrism. I appreciate your concern and thanks for making me think about that fact.
Eboni Evans: Your comment was by far the most helpful and that’s not because we share the same name. I agree with everything you said about racism and you even got me thinking of some other things that I wasn’t thinking of before.
I think that the patriarchs and matriarchs are good role models for the most part but they are still human. The patriarchs are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God chooses Abraham to make the lives of his people better. All of these men are good role models in the fact that they trust and fear God. Abraham and his wife Sarah so desperately wanted a child. Sarah, was barren and could not have children. God blesses Sarah and Abraham with a son named Isaac. God then request that Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac to show his loyalty. Abraham follows God’s commandment and attempts to murder his son Isaac. This shows extreme loyalty and faith in God. I believe this is a good quality that the patriarchs possess. Not many humans would sacrifice their own children for the sake of anything. Isaac is a questionable role model. He deceives the king by pretending that his wife was his sister. Yet, he did so because there was severe famine in the land and they were in need of food. So, in a way I would say that Isaac was trying to provide for his family, even though he did so in a deceitful way. Jacob, however is a little controversial. Esau sells his birthright and Jacob also deceives his father and pretends to be Esau by using the hair of a goat. He then steals Esau’s blessing. This is an example of a deceitful and greedy person. This is not befitting of a good role model.
My favorite command in the Decalogue is the seventh one. Though shall not commit adultery. This commandment is particularly interesting to me because it is the one our society really struggles with. Under the separation of church and state there has become and issue of whether adulterers should do jail time. Under the Commandments the person should be punished for the action of committing adultery. I also wonder why this was even implementing since there are so many examples of polygamy in the Bible. I also think that this rule is also one of the hardest. Are we humans designed to be monogamous? Is it possible to be faithful to one person for a significant amount of time? Obviously God thought it was very possible.
My project icon will be as follows, I believe it represents everything that I am trying to accomplish.
