Week 3 Blog

In my week two blog I talked about 3 main problems that I saw in society. The problems were the war in Iraq, poverty, and healthcare. The problem that I choose to address is the War in Iraq. Now I am not trying to go on a campaign and end the war, but I want to inform people about the issue, the problems its causing and why it need to be resolved. The War in Iraq is a very bloody and violent conflict. Thousands of people have lost their lives because of it. Not many people know what exactly is going on over there. The news only shows what they want you to see. All you here about is how many Americans soldiers died in a suicide attack or something of that nature. You never here about how many Israelis are killed by Americans. The first thing I have to do is research the topic more. I have very limited knowledge about the war in Iraq. I do know that the United States has been over in Iraq for a very long time. When September 11 happened the nation’s focus was on the Middle East, specifically Iraq. Once I have all of my information I want start by using the internet as a way to distribute my information. I plan to start a group on a popular website for college students. This group will be used to inform students about the past and present events that have occurred while the nation has been at war with Iraq. I want to put emphasis on how a lot of the soldiers that are in Iraq are our ages and how they are being killed. College students can emphasize with them since they are the same age. I could only imagine how it is to be over there at such a young age. I could never imagine losing my life at the age of nineteen or twenty either. I also want to give the number of the Israelis that have died. Many people have ignored this fact. I want to show the importance of life, no matter whose it is. Since the war has been going on, countless number of people has died. All life is important in some way or form. Some people don’t care about the Iraqis or how many of them have died. They are just as important as the American soldiers. They have families that care about them as well.
Another point I plan on talking about is how much money is being put into the war. There are so many things that the money being spent on the war could be used for. One example can be seen here in New Orleans. New Orleans is still a long way from being where they were pre-Katrina. The money used for the war could be used to upgrade the levee systems, or to clean up neighborhoods, or it can be given to the education system. On a nation wide level the money could be spent on schools all throughout the nation. There are many schools that are not equipped with the latest technology needed to provide the proper education to its students. Many schools are working with out of date materials as well. These are just a few of the problems that the U.S. can spend more time on then war that nobody believes in. Eventually I plan to move my discussions from the internet and have them in person. First I would start of by going to an organization on campus that has discussions and forum. An example is the NAACP or the Pre-law club. Then I could gain the interests of other students on campus. If I get enough supports and enough interest then maybe I can get a speaker to come to Xavier and talk about the subject. I don’t know who would be a good speaker to come to Xavier. There are a lot of possibilities. It could be a politician like a senator that is against the war, or I could be someone who was in Iraq themselves. It could also be a family member of someone who was in Iraq. I know that a lot of families started to protest the war after their son or daughter were killed. I think the most influential would be someone who was overseas and could testify to everything that was happening over there. Like I stated early we only see what the news stations want us to see, we don’t hear the whole story. Someone who was there could tell how it was to live there, how the Iraqis were, how violent it was, how many people were being killed. It is a lot of things that a speaker like this could tell us. Maybe we can have more then one speaker come. It could start off as a person who has served in the war and then move up to someone on the political side of things. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a politician or someone with a high ranking position in the military, but someone who is well knowledge. This could be an author who has written a lot about the subject. It could also be a political science professor as well. This won’t just be for Xavier students either, I would like all types of people to come and show support and here what the speaker has to say. Another idea that I came up with is to have survey how Xavier students feel about the war in Iraq, whether they were for it or against it. A survey like this could show how Xavier students feel about the war in general. I could also ask should American be withdrawn and should more be sent in. I could even ask about a speaker. I could provide a list of possible candidates and see how well the students respond to them. This will help in the long run so I can make chooses that will attract more people and get them know more about the war.
Archaeology helps bible scholars a lot. With information from the bible, bible scholars go to ancient site and did around to see if they can find remnants of things, like pottery or other ceramic work. It can give a good idea of what the society was like that lived around that time. It could also provide proof with some of the accounts that happened in the bible.

Darnell Leavell- I really like your idea. I would still like to know how you plan to implement this awareness. I think you are underestimating yourself when it comes to the amount of things that could be done for the awareness. I like the idea that your plans are not to be persuasive in trying to get people to be against the war but instead to make everyone aware of the pressing issues.

I think your idea is really good…you are right people need to be informed on the war and Iraq and where there tax dollars are going. I think its awesome that you thought to use websites popular for college students to increase awareness. I do agree with Darnell it will be hard work, but you can do anything you put your mind to. If you have a passion for it; it can be done. You should really look into joining groups that are already formed and be careful not to do anything to get yourself in trouble with government intelligence
