Hello everyone we are in week 10. I am so happy to see everyone is still trying to catch up on their blogs, it’s been hard but we are definitely getting through it and doing our best. And you that’s all that matters. This week’s blogs has to do with more comments on our world project in class.
Number one: Kristen Cosper:
When I was younger I remember my teachers would tell my classmates and I to protect the earth by respecting it. WE were told not to liter and the recycle as much as possible. For awhile, my parents would recycle cans and bottles but it has since changed. I think because more people do not really think the pollution is an issue a true and important issue affecting our Society. Which I can understand considering other things likes violence, poverty, illiteracy and world conflict. That is one of the reason I don’t think I could really name pollution as one of the major issues facing the world today, if not on it at all. That is one of the reasons I find your project very interesting. I like how you choose using the media as a forum to open up the issue to others. That is how I was introduced to the concept of pollution as a young person. But I am a little considered on how exactly you plan on gaining funding for this? I think it might be a little hard to do considering this project have to be done this class semester and we as college students have limited time and money to make this happen. That is why I think that you should try somehow to go and talk to students at Xavier by sending out fliers and things like that along with maybe teaching young students at elementary school about pollution. You can tell them the importance and also tell them that they can be reward for their awareness by selling cans and bottles to recycle centers. But I think that all in your entire project and your plan seems to be on the right track. I think you picked a good project especially for the area we are staying in. New Orleans has got to be the most polluted area in the nation, I am convinced. Good Luck.
Number three: Dionna Mathews:
I think that illiteracy is a huge problem. I was look to have two parents that taught me how to read as soon as possible. They understood the importance of reading. How will you be able to learn if you don’t know how to read? Or how can you continue in the school system if you can not read? I think that also violence is a big problem needs to be addressed as well. In fact, I talked about this in my own paper. I even put that role models are a reason why a lot of young people do the things they do. They have no guidance. The big brother/sister program is very important to look at in providing a system of setting up a system of being a role model. I think that you should of brought out more ways to solve these problems other than just the role model system. But I think your on the right track.
Number four:Ashley Jackson:
By reading your blog I can see your true passion for urging people, especially young people, to vote. I like many people feel like voting is something that everyone should take advantage of. I think that we as women and black people have had so many people in the past fight so hard for us to acquire these right and it would be a shame for them to that we do not taking advantage of it. I think that people forget the people that fought for this right. I also think that people should not just view the presidential election as the only on the y should vote for, but also they should make sure they vote for other officials of office. That is why I feel like your project is a good one. The lack of voting is something that I find to be a huge problem. With young people is our community they don’t believe that they have a voice or the power to change national issues. But if we did communicate that even though the phase, “Your vote counts”, it actually is true. I think awareness should be your key objective for your project. I think that you should try to explore that avenue a little more in your project. But I think that all in your entire project and your plan seems to be on the right track. HIV/AIDS I just think that you should go into how you think that you can open up people’s minds to voting this semester. Good luck.
Number five: Teanakia DeOcampo
Within the world the topic of HIV/AIDS is a very taboo subject to discuss, which is why I believe that probably why HIV/AIDS is running so rapid in many communities. People do not talk about it and gain the information they need to protect themselves. I think that we as a society need and should change that. The epidemic has already become very severe. I do believe that the problem has become more media aware. I think that it still has room to grow. I think that your suggestions are right on the money. Classes that are focused around information on protection and prevention would be greatly beneficial to young people and old people alike. So your idea on posting statistics in different places those students might frequently pass by or through, so that they can see it on their way to class is very good way to ensure that they will find useful information. But a suggestion is not to have too many of these so that students do not feel bombarded by them. Along with, I think that you should make them catchy. Because you know how our attention span is not as high as it should be. Otherwise it will become just some other flyer that we over look on the way to class. I also think that your plan on involving the community is another good plan. Everyone can agree that when the community gets involved in something things start happening and changes start occurring much more rapidly because of word of mouth and other things. I would like to know more about how you intend to fund your project and how u feel you will put your plan to work on it this semester. But I think that all in your entire project and your plan seems to be on the right track. Just develop it more. Good luck.
Number five: Itta Aswad
I agree that materialism is a problem especially in the African American community. But to say that you think that peoples money should be regulated is something that I can not agree with. That is an idea close t o communism and we all know how that worked out for Russia. The tax I think is a good idea to a certain degree. I think that the richer population should be responsible for helping out t he poor but I think that its hard to penalize a group of people for the fact that they are doing better than another group. Your second idea of limiting the consumption of certain things I think is also something I do no agree with. I don’t think that it is fair that our government would have the ability to regulate how much we by of something. I think that if you work hard you should reward yourself for it in whatever way you want. I think that your point of trying to change the mentality of thinking that “things” are greater than what they are is the most realistic approach of solving the problem.
Number six: Jessica Turners
When I read your project I must say the first think I thought of was that you have created a very unique project. I also thought that it was formulated nicely. That is one of the reasons I really did not want to write about it. I thought that it would be hard to critique and hold true to my 300 word goal for each comment. But let me try. First of all I really like your idea of having girls actually stay with the crying babies twenty-four seven. I can say that that would drive me insane and open my eyes to seeing that babies are not always cute and cuddly. I have seen it work plenty of times on talk shows. And the results were profound. Probably because like I said more it gives young people a huge reality check. I would hope something like that would work because as a young woman who is struggling to graduate without a child, I am always saddened to see girls get pregnant early and not be able to come to their full potential. I also feel that you need other preventions besides the crying baby activity that is where education comes into play. Focus on this and I think your project would be even better developed. I also think you should talk more about your plans funding. I don’t believe that you will encounter any hard funding for a project of teen pregnancy prevention. I think that you project so far is well developed and is on the right track. I want to know ore about how you will try to fulfill it in this semester. But other than that, Good luck. And I wish you well on you project and really hop it might make a difference in the community or at least in the life of a young woman.
Number seven: Nedra Goldman
Unfortunately, it seems as though many of America has forgotten about homeless people. I do not really know if this is because the issues of the world now are not focused on it because people do not view it important or because our officials in officials in office are not focusing their attention on it. What ever the reason might but we need to try to make a proactive approach and change their minds. The Hunger Coalition is a great way to implement your project and also to change the nation’s views on these very serious problems. I like it because it gives you the flexibility to not only help the homeless, but you also have the opportunity to interact with them one on one. I like the ideas of interaction with them because many of the times they are depressed and a sort of friendship would do a lot for their views of being alone. I also think that you should elaborate on the other things you want to implement in your plan. I would love to know what are your other ideas concerning homelessness. How do you project you will get funding for your project? What avenues do you want to explode in order to make it more recognized nationally or at least around campus? Do plan to put up flyer? But a suggestion that I have if you intend to do this is not to have too many of these so that students do not feel bombarded by them. Along with, I think that you should make them catchy. Because you know how our attention span is not as high as it should be. Otherwise it will become just some other flyer that we over look on the way to class. But other than that, Good luck. And I wish you well on you project and really hop it might make a difference in the community or at least in the life of one person.
Number eight: Courtney Solomon:
I loved your choice of problem and your sloution to the problem. I have been in the private school system all my life but I have heard and seen how the public school system is so bad. I agree that we need to put pressure on our politicians to give public schools more funding. I think that all schools should be treated the same regardless of where the school lies. I think that money needs to be dispensed is the fashion that best improves the standards of education. I also can agree that the people take education for granted and they need to be taught or showed that education is the only way to succeed in the world right now. I starts first with our parents instilling us t hat you need an education. Then, it turns to our schools simulating our minds the crave learning. Many people do not understand that education is freeing. Your mind is explained in so many ways that you feel like you have been touched in so many ways. My mother always told me that there are two things that people can never take away form you, your faith and your education. I can see that you would agree with this thought.
Number nine: Meghan Shannon
I found your blog of your project to be the most interesting and probably the most unique. The reason for this is because I don think I ever thought that it was a big problem. I don know if that is a good thing considering that I plan to be a pharmacist. But after reading your blog I can see now that in these days more and more people have prescriptions. Only a select few of people do not have to take drugs to get by. I am so thankful of those people. I don’t think that I would be able to do it because I am always on the go and I would definitely forget to take one or take it at the right time. That is why when I read your plan I did some research and asked people that I know that could give me insight on the issue at hand. I talk to a couple of pharmacist that agreed with this being a problem. They told me that it is something that doctors need to understand. They also told me that it is something that pharmacist need to take more into account when they treat their patients. They also told me that the problem usually goes into affect when they treat older people than younger ones. This is to me understandable considering that elderly people take more medication on average and they also do not have the same mental sharpness as the younger generations. For your project I have a few questions. How do you project you will get funding for your project? What avenues do you want to explode in order to make it more recognized nationally or at least around campus? But good luck on your project I think that you are on the right track.
Number ten: . Tonica Herron:
I am happy to see that someone is very passionate about voting and they are also young. When I was eighteen I was very energetic about voting as well. I thought that it was a duty of mine and every person that has the opportunity to vote should take advantage of it. There should be no reason for someone to complain about policies if t hey did not try to do something to change it. Your idea is a good one but the only thing that I worry about is, people do these things already. They go to campuses and try to recruit voters. I am not t o sure about using prizes though to get people to vote. I think its a interesting idea but I also think that it might a little bit of a bribe. I also think t hat the problem is not that people are not registered to vote but the problem lies in people not going through the voting process. You should maybe revise it a little and try to maybe drive the point as to why it is so necessary for votes to be used. Teaching people that everyone’s vote is important because it really does count. Look at the Florida episode. But I think that it is still a very good start for looking at a solution of the low voting rates.
