The story of Tobit is found in the Book of Tobit which is apart of the Catholic canon. This book is believed to be apocryphal which means its author is unknown, but it is a spirtual text that is related to other Biblical writings and is collected with other spirtual texts. Tobit is about a Jew who was apart of the tweleve tribes of Isreal. Tobit along with the rest of the Jews of Isreal was sent to Assyria under the rule of King Sargon II. After Sargon’s death his son Sennacherib took the place as king. Sennacherib would kill Jews out of acts of cruelty and Tobit would make sure Jews were given proper burials. After finding this out Sennacherib had all Tobit’s riches taken and exiled him from the city of Ninevth. Ninveth was a kingdom inside of the Assyrian empire that Tobit resided. After Sennacherib died Tobit was able to return to the Assyrian kingdom of Ninevth. When Tobit returned he buried a man that had been killed which was still illgeal for him to do. Tobit sleep outside this particular night and had bird poop fall on his eyes. When Tobit awoke he found that he was a blind man. After this Tobit’s marriage, begin to fall apart and he found himself praying for death. In the country of Media a woman named Sarah also prays for death. All of the men in Sarah’s life are overtaken the night before the women by a demon of lust. So a angel by the name of Raphel is sent to release Sarah and Tobit from their despair. The story is largely about Tobit’s son Tobiah and his journey to Media. Tobiah is sent to Media by his father to get some money. On the way Tobiah meets a man by the name of Azariah who offers him protection on his way to Media. This man is really Raphel is disguise (angel in disguise). During this journey Tobiah is attacked by a giant fish. This fish is stripped for its gall bladder, heart, and liver which were used to make medicines. When Tobiah arrives in Media he meets Sarah and learns he can marry her because she is from his tribe. Azariah the angel in disguise tells Tobiah to burn the liver and the heart of the fish in order to drive away the demon. Sarah’s father is unaware of this and has Tobiah’s grave dug in belief he will be dead. When he returns he finds Tobiah alive and throws a feast or their wedding. In the meanwhile Tobit is back home waiting on the money from his son. Tobiah is unable to send the money just yet and has Azariah the angel in disguise to do so. When Tobiah returns home with his new bride he heals his father’s blindness with the gallbladder of the fish. Azariah then tells Tobiah that he is really an angel, and leaves to go back to heaven. In the end, Tobit dies and warns his son and his son’s wife Sarah to leave, before the city was destroyed by God according to prophecy.
The Maccabees are looked upon with favor by the Jews because they delivered them from suppression. The Jews were under the rule of Antichous Epiphanes IV, a Greek ruler who suppressed the beliefs and pracitces of the Jews. He also tried to force Hellenism on Jews.Antichous Epiphanes ruled under the Greek Seleucid Empire. This empire was eventually taken over by Maccabees. They saw them as saviors from the harsh and controlling rule of Antichous Epiphanes. The Maccabees put an end to the Greek Seleucid Empire and started the beginning of the Hasmoneran Empire. This was not a quick conquer, it lasted from the years of 175 BCE to 134 BCE. It included several Maccabee rulers. Under this empire the Jews were able to continue the pracitce of their dietary laws, circumcision, and other practices that were suppressed under the rule of Antichous Epiphanes. Because of this Jews look upon the Maccabees with favor for overtaking the Seleucid Empire. This story is found in the book of Maccabees I and also in the book of Maccabees II.
