My hurricane experience was through the television because I hail from Atlanta, Georgia where we rarely have any threats of the sort. I was actually down here planning to come to Xavier but left when I saw the news and decided to play it safe and go home. For the last few years I have been coming to New Orleans for the various events such as the Essence Festival and Mardi Gras so when I heard the effect of the storm on the news my heart went out the residents of the city. I couldn’t imagine the feeling of loss from a blow like that. It pissed me off looking at the broadcasts filming a tragedy from the sky when they could have been helping pick people up. I didnt want to see people sitting on top of their houses. I wanted to see them being rescued. As a matter of fact the actual reporting was irritating because the word “refugee” was used throughout all the channels on every broadcast. Are you a refugee in you own country? I learn something new everyday. Even Atlanta’s newspaper had a frontpage headline bearing the word. I dont see in what way that could have helped the situation at all.
