Week 5: My Logo

My favorite commandment in the Decalogue is, “Thou shall have no other God’s before me.” This is my favorite commandment, because it tells us that we should always put God first in all that we do. Putting God first is the essence of life and the key to eternal life. My favorite commandment is a daily reminder that the Father should come always come first. If this commandment is highly valued then the remaining nine commandments will be upheld as well. We only answer to one God, therefore we should celebrate only one God. Putting one God before you is to honor him in everything that you do. By implementing this commandment into your life you begin to stop taking life for granted. Appreciating God’s gift of life, love, and the earth will allow you to see the wrong in abortion, hatred, and environmental destruction among other worldly vices.

For the most part I was asked the question about how to get the students to help and how would my project affect the world. In general my response was that the students are in my mom’s economic class so they will have to participate for a grade. This started off as a project to convey a concept that is used in economics. My mom was trying to show the importance of philanthropy and how it affects our economic system. I looked at her project and saw an opportunity to help others to function as philanthropists. I also commented directly to the person’s questions on my bog for last week.

As far as our matriarchs and patriarchs being good role models, I would have to say based solely on my opinion that they are in fact good role models. God understands that his children are not perfect. Faith is so simple that it is very difficult to attain. Patience is key and unfortunately, this characteristic is not natural for the average human. God made a promise to Abraham that he would be given a son. God never said when, but the important part is that he said he would. When, is something that should not be dwelled on, because God’s plan for your life, Abraham’s life, or anybody’s life is not the same. No one shares the same path. Our life stories are like snowflakes. Each one is unique. God purposely waited until Abraham and Sarah were elderly to test their faith. Abraham and Sarah are good role models, because we are given something to learn from. Their mistakes promote growth for those of us who do believe. We can’t learn from people who don’t relate to us. Relatibility is important for a connection to be formed. Advice from someone who we have always seen on their feet isn’t as useful as advice from someone who we have seen all down but get back up. (This is actually from a Donnie McClurkin song!) Abraham redeemed himself when he agreed to sacrifice his only son to God. He remained faithful and trusted that the Lord would direct him in a righteous path. A good role model exhibits how to walk when you have encountered obstacles.

According to http://www.aracnet.com/~wing/suzerain.htm Yahweh is considered to be the Suzerain and Moses is the vassal. The Suzerain is the superior and the Vassal is the inferior. In ancient times Suzerain-Vassal treaties were very common. The Decalogue fits into the context of the previously mentioned treated because it lists the title of the Suzerain, declaring it’s superiority and then it also names why the treaty should be followed. The Suzerain gives reasons why honoring his demands are plausible. In the ten commandments it says, I am the Lord, your God, Who brought you out of Egypt.” By stating that he delivered the Israelites from Egypt gives God the upper hand. He subtly hints that in the future if his name is called he won’t answer unless you have abided by and honored his Decalogue.
