Week 6: Related Readings

This week’s blog asks us about the updates of our project. Although it is sad to say, I have to admit that I have not done so much with my project at this point. To reiterate the topic, my project is about trying to reduce teen pregnancy locally. I have searched for the local places around New Orleans such as Planned Parenthood and Teen Pregnancy. I am in the process of planning a visit to the Planned Parenthood in New Orleans to see if they can offer any advice as to how I could perhaps help them with their fight against this growing problem. Maybe I will be able to see the struggles that they are encountering, and I could try to find a way to help fix those minor problems. Sadly, I know that I probably cannot do a great deal of work because I have to focus on school and work. My efforts are probably not much but I will try to do what I can. I was considering printing out a large number of fliers that asks parents if they have spoken to their children about sex lately. Keeping the flier short and simple was my basic idea. I am hoping to spend a day simply driving around and dropping these fliers off in mailboxes, but I am not too sure if this is such a great idea as of right now. I do not want to get in any trouble if people are suspecting that I am trying to steal their mail or something of the sort. As for anything I could do that would make a greater impact on children today, I do not think I am capable of going as far as having speakers go to different schools to talk about this subject since many parents are probably hesitant about allowing an adult speak of sex to their children. Many parents know that this is what their child needs to hear, but they are probably afraid that this might send out the wrong message to their children. I know that the best place I could get the word out to young people is by posting fliers and posters in places like the mall and movie theatres. These are the places that teens spend most of their time. That and school, but I am sure most schools do not want to take the risk of promoting the wrong idea onto the children.
As of right now, I am not too sure of what my future plans are. My major is currently Chemistry, but I am undecided as to where I will take it from there. I might go into Pharmacy or I might choose to look into some graduate programs that are available out there. All that I know as of right now is that chemistry is something I enjoy. On a brighter note, I do know that taking this class will help me in my daily life struggles in which I will encounter. In this class we go through so many stories of what happened in the past and how these situations were handled. Many of the stories teach us important lessons about how we should treat one another with kindness, love, and respect no matter what mean things that have been done to us. It teaches us about how karma works and how we should think things through before we do things that we just might regret afterwards. Taking this class helps me understand that expensive cars are not the only thing that will make me happy. If I learn to understand and love the people around me, then I, too, will get the same reaction back. That is more joy than any car can ever give me (it would definitely be a lesser impact on my wallet also). We are only halfway through the semester but, I know that this class will help me with my future profession because it would definitely make me a better person. I would not be thinking about the benefits I would receive but, instead, the benefits for everyone else around me.
Feminist Criticism is a useful tool because it points out all of the women in the Bible and the way they are described. Women were not respected at that point in time. They were treated like property and were humiliated for things that they could do nothing about. They fulfilled their life goals when they reproduced and took care of the men and children. Women were also portrayed as an evil source only existing to bring men down to their knees, making them the weaker sex. In the Feminist Criticism text that we read, the author speaks about how it may have been the way the stories were translated during that period of time that helped to develop this sense that women are not as important or superior as men. The author blames today’s society on the translation of the stories in the past. She believes that this is why men are being paid so much more than women in the work force even though both have the same amount of skill required to fulfill one’s duties. The Feminist Criticism offers a means of debate against what society though about women in the past.
We did not take the midterm exam quite yet so there is no grade to be discussed. The study was definitely helpful because it gave me pretty much a detailed outline of the things to be expected. Because this class is reading and writing intensive, it is nice to have something that narrows it down almost specifically so that I am able to go back and focus on what I would consider to be more important and pertaining to the midterm exam. I cannot go as far as to say that I am excited and anxious about the upcoming midterm exam, but I think I do feel better prepared than if I had to do without the study guide – that of which I am grateful for.
