Week 9: Implementation

The past couple weeks I’ve been very busy implementing my project to help end poverty. Although this feat has not been particularly easy, it has definitely been a learning experience. Through various phone calls and letters I was able to meet with the program coordinator for American Society on Aging. My thought and ideas were very well received and she informed but that she already had a similar program going, but she expressed that she was always in need of volunteers. I enthusiastically agreed to help out with the implementation of the programs already in progress but I first had to succumb to a 6 week long training program. It is necessary for me to complete the course and a short exam so that I might be able to help explain the curriculum and serve as an instructor’s aid. For the past few weeks, twice a week, I go down to their office in Baton Rouge and re-learn programs like Microsoft Word, Power point, and the wonders of the internet. But most importantly I’m learning how to methodically instruct someone on the basics of computer use. Although it is frustrating to be instructed on things I already know how to do, it has been informative to learn how to instruct someone step-by-step. This program has been slow moving but I have not been standing idle. I am also involved with a fundraiser event for Aging and Adult Services, the San Bernardino Chapter. As a resident of California, this is a project I’ve prided myself in helping out with for the past 4 years. This year as our fundraiser we’ve organized a casino-night party. Previous fundraisers have been very successful and have greatly benefited our program. This organization deals mainly with financial aid, medical aid, home placement and job placement programs. The point of this fundraiser is to earn enough money to fund a new technology building in Riverside, CA. Every year that we hold this event, we have a different theme. This year’s theme is “Aging and Adult Services: Moving from the Past to the Present.” This is a black tie event where many sponsors will be making contributions as well as private citizens. The tickets are $50 per person and over 300 people are expected to be in attendance. My mother is a skilled balloon artist, so she and her company are in charge of décor. As part of the decorations they’ve designed centerpieces of various inventions from the past to the present. In addition to decorations a band, caterer and casino dealers have been hired for the entertainment of our guest. Aside from a night of fun, this event will also include a brief award ceremony honoring those patrons who have helped support the program for the last ten years. I have been working hand-in-hand with the event coordinator with advertisement and sponsorship for the event. Although it has been hard to work with her from out of state we spend many hours corresponding by phone and e-mail. I also was responsible for designing and ordering invitations. It will take place on November 9th, 2007 so I will soon be traveling back home to implement this banquet/ casino-night party. Planning, organizing and implementing events such as this are truly a pleasure. I’m very much looking forward to seeing both of my projects through but it has also been strenuous balancing classes and homework along with volunteering and training.
In reference to the Deuteronomistic historian a good king would remain loyal and devoted to God. He would rule his people in the laws of God and if he is led astray he would always come back to God. He would rely on his prophets for advice and trust their judgments. The Deuteronomistic historian gave an account of the Israelite monarchy in the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings by using theology from Deuteronomy. He portrays Solomon as being the greatest ruler of Israel. He was both wise and powerful. He was guided by God and his prophets; who had made many victories possible. The author tells stories of how Israel obeys and prospers, then disobeys and suffers. One constant theme of this story is the fact that God always come to their rescue no matter how far they stray. The deuteronomistic historian seeks to understand these events. His style is to take events that have already been mentioned or things that have been said in the earlier books of the bible and twist and portray them in a theological light. I do believe the deuteronomistic historian would approve of Bush as president. Although he was made many mistakes and, as many believe has led us astray, we still remain the most powerful nation in the world. That power gives us the ability to afflict change in the world. As long as we as a people continued to seek God in times of trouble he will continue to deliver us. Our lives could be so much worse but we’ve been blessed regardless of the mistakes our head of state has made. The worst thing David did as king is hard to say. There are many questionable events surrounding David’s reign. For instance, all of his enemies and people who stood as obstacles died but he is spared from blame by showing lament and literally killing the messenger. To me the worst thing David did was killing the men that secured his throne in Israel. He pronounced them traitors and killed them for killing Ishbaal.
When David was king, he told God that he would build him a house, but God vowed to David that he would build him a dynasty. From David’s dynasty came Solomon, a man of great wisdom. He built God a house or temple. The temple was used as an altar and home for the Ark of the Covenant. It was a long rectangular building with an entrance between two pillars. Inside of the room called the Holy Place were ten tables with bread upon them, there were also ten lamps with were always burning. This first temple held the items that represented God’s ongoing provision of food and God’s covenant with Israel. The second room is the Most Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant rests. It also held to statues of cherubim that stood above the Ark.

Its good you want to help end poverty. But in reality there will always be people with less there will never be a end to poverty. I mean you can do thing to try to make it better but there will always be poverty

I agree with the student above that you may never end poverty but your approach to help it is a real good idea. We really don’t realize it but many people are getting left behind with all this new technology. Help teaching people about computer is a really good because they could use those skills for future jobs.

It’s really good your commited to helping poverty. This is obvious for your willingness to go through a 6 week program to be able to help officially. The thing about the fundraiser to fund a new technology center in Riverside is a very good idea. I am also a resident of California, not quite riverside but i have never heard anything of this but it seems like a very good idea. Buildings like this help aid people in skills that could help them find jobs in the future.

I feel your pain about having to be taught things that you already know in the 6 week program. But Im sure that you know youre doing it for a great cause. I agree with the two students above me who say that poverty will always be around. But anything that we can do to help people better their lives is always better than sitting around throwing up our hands towards a problem. Good project and good luck.

Wow! Krista I really like your project. Although it may be frustrating to have to re-learn material you already know just remember that there is a purpose. You are taking a great initiative to try and help the problem of poverty. Good luck with your project.

Your project is coming along really well. Poverty is a pretty very serious issue that often gets overlooked. Poverty is always going to be around but at least you are doing your part to help make the world better. Good luck with your project.

It sounds like your project is working out fairly smoothly. After you complete your training, who will you teach the information to? In relation to poverty, what exactly does the Aging and Adult Services program do for people? Good luck with the rest of your project.

I’m glad that your project is taking off and you are getting involved. To tell you the truth I would probably not travel to Baton Rouge for much of anything. So I applaud you on taking the training classes. Hopefully you can teach things to others and increase their success. I would also like to know what the Aging and Adult Services Program actually does. Good Luck.

your project is really going well. I have to give you credit for taking those training classes. It is nice that you’re going to educate people about poverty. However, I think it will be difficult to end poverty. It is good that you’re doing something to improve it though. What is actually the Aging and Adult services program? Good Luck

This is a particularly difficult project. As we both know one person can’t physically change the country, your influence can encourage others to join you in your fight. Although it seems Long and dificult please keep up the good work. I hope all goes well with your project. You have a compassionate heart.

As other students have stated, you may never end poverty. But does that mean that you should not try to end it? I applaud you for tackling a major problem. This is not just a problem faced by many Americans, it also effects numerous other in many different countries. Your project sounds very organized and hopefully it will be a success. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Well I comend you on your efforts to help out and volunteer although they are putting you through hell with trying to “officially” help. May I enlighten you on other ways you can help without going through the whole training program? First, you may want to look at it like this, poverty is staring you in your face. Many people around Xavier is struggling…and basicly lives in poverty because of the cost of tution. Maybe you might want to consider help your neighbor, literally. Then, you can help disadvantaged children in the area without going through to much…you can volunteer at a school in an poverty stricken area [that is just about every school in New Orleans]. You can simpily donate to the poor. Or better yet, you can create your own program and get Xavier students to volunteer in their free time. So those were just some ideas you may want to take into consideration to make your project a little eaiser for you to implement. Good Luck!!

It’s good to see such a daring attempt. Your frustration is understandable, but keep at it because you are developing essential skills in the implementation of your project. Keep up the great work!!!!

Ending poverty is definitely a feat and I commend you for trying to tackle it. If the world would involve themselves it wouldn’t be such a challenge. I would also like to commend you on your dedication. Your project involved a lot of your time. Taking training classes is no joke! Is there a website available about the organization?

We all know that there is no way to completely end poverty, but the only thing we can do is give the homeless hope and support. The homeless people need to know that there are people out there who still care about them and haven’t given up on them just yet. I’m trying to accomplish the same goal by helping out the homeless. I think your project is going really well. $50 dollars a ticket and you know for sure that 300 people are attending? That is amazing! I applaud your hard work. Good Job!!
