Ashley Garnett Background–Week 1

535 words by Ashley Garnett

My hurricane story really is not as interesting as others that I have heard. Luckily, my family and I evacuated the Saturday before the storm actually hit. We did not have to battle with too much traffic or anything; we were faced with one dilemma though, we were unsure if the hotel where we made last minute reservations would allow us to bring our beloved dog, Bubba. My sister and I had a heated argument on whether or not we should bring him or leave him to weather the wrath of Katrina. Needless to say I usually win most arguments and we brought Bubba along for the adventure. We evacuated to Houston, Texas and as soon as we arrived I knew that Texas would never be home for me. I believed like most others that I would be back home by Tuesday at the latest, Katrina or should I say “higher officials” had other plans for my city.

My family and I resided in Texas for close to a year following the storm. Even though, we lived there for awhile, I personally never adjusted to the driving. The drivers in Texas drive at two speeds; fast and faster. I thought that I would get used to it eventually; however each time I would get in my car to go anywhere I would say a silent prayer that God would help me to make it to my destination and back safely. SHEESH!! Other than the driving issue, honestly Texas was not too bad, however “There’s no place like home”. So as soon as my grandfather’s home was livable, I returned home. My grandfather resided in the New Orleans seventh ward area which suffered severely from the storm; fortunately my home was recognizable after the storm subsided; only suffering minor damages. So here I am back home, hoping and praying that Gustav takes another route!!

I am very optimistic about this course. It seems as if this course will be very different from the other courses I am taking. I am a Chemistry/Pre-Pharmacy major therefore my schedule consists of mostly science courses and labs. In these courses, facts, equations, and more facts and equations are given, whereas this course will allow us students to express our opinions and ideas such as this blog. I can not ever remember posting comments in any of my other classes, so for me this is a welcomed change.

My expectations for this course are to gain a better understanding of the Bible, its background, the language presented in the Bible, and to become a better-rounded person. Learning more about the Bible will help me with my practicing Christian faith. I was brought up in a Catholic environment; the Catholic religion does not always emphasize the importance of reading the Bible. I do however, often read the Bible, probably not as much as I should. When reading the Bible I often find the text very difficult to understand due to the dialect. I am most optimistic that this course will assist with understanding. I should also invest in “The Bible for Dummies” as well!! I make the most out of all opportunities and intend to do the same with this course.

Good job for week one. If you get a chance go back and fill it out so it’s 1000 words long.
