Keiasha Robin’s Background

On August 28, 2005, my family and I evacuated from New Orleans, Louisiana with plans of staying by my cousin’s house in Houston, Texas, for a maximum of three days. At about 11:00 am, we decided that it was time to get on the road, so myself and 13 of my family members were on the interstate in stop and go traffic, departing for what we thought would be a three day vacation. On the morning of August 29, I watched the television with a blank look on my face wondering how the only place I knew as home would never be the same.
About a week after the hurricane, when they started letting people back into the city, I decided to ride with my uncle and grandfather to get some more of our belongings. As soon as we entered Algiers, my eyes became watery, looking at all of the damage that Katrina had caused. Once we got back to Texas, my mom and I began looking for a job. After about two days we found one working for Red Cross at the Astrodome, where they were housing Katrina evacuees. After working for three days, I decided that I couldn’t handle the environment or the situation any longer so I quit. There were so many horror stories from little girls and old woman getting raped, to people not eating or drinking anything in days and the worse the thousands of dead bodies that were floating around the city. After staying in Houston, for about two months, my mom became home sick & decided that she would return home. As soon as we came home, my mom returned to work at Xavier University, saying that she was tired of being in the house watching the news. Since we stayed in Algiers, we didn’t have any major damage, but we decided to start our lives over with the demeanor “that nothing should be taken for granted.”
Here I am three years after the storm, enrolled in Intro to Biblical Studies, which seems like an interesting class and Dr. Homan seems like a really nice person, so my expectations for this semester are to learn everything I didn’t know about the bible and expand my knowledge on the things I did know. My major is psychology, and although this course has nothing to do with my major and the only background I have of the bible is from attending church and reading a few passages, it may be able to help me better myself as a person. It is very interesting to learn about the life that Jesus lived, but it is also complicated, because I don’t understand some of the language used. This course will hopefully give me a better understanding of that, while at the same opening my eyes up to the views of others. Since I am willing, to succeed in this course, the course commitments will not be a problem, besides I never blogged anything before, so that will be an interesting challenge that I look forward to.
