Gumbolina

by Y. Clark  ( 4th Grade )

Long ago in New Orleans, Louisiana there lived a family named Boochey.  The Boochey's had three children. A handsome son named Grialleds, a daughter named Chere and a beautiful little baby named Gumbolina.  She was given that name because her mom loves gumbo.  Gumbo hates her name because all the girls tease her, including her cousin Thumberlina File.  Everyday she would run home and cry.  One day, she was in her room watching Leah Chase cook up some Cowan and Lost Bread and she heard sounds coming from her closet.  She got up and searched to find out who was making those noises, When she opened the closet she saw a little girl crouched over in the corner.  She asked what her name was and she said "GumboGumbo".  Gumbolina said, don't cry, I will help you.  What's the problem?  GumboGumbo said that she hated her name and wanted to run away from her Creole cottage.  She said she was tired of people calling her names and always teasing her.  Gumbolina thought about all the names that people called her, especially in her own family.  She decided to help the poor little girl out.  She lifted GumboGumbo up, and sat her down on the front porch and shared her family photo album with her Gumbolina explained why she should be proud of her name, because it evokes such great memories for people.  They decided to become best friends for life.  Later they ate two big bowls of Okra Gumbo and sang Creole songs on their porch.
