Comparative Religion: A Global Perspective

The focus of this project is to enhance student understanding of various religious traditions and the responses of these traditions to globalization and violence. The first half of the semester will be devoted to exploring the beliefs, practices, and historical development of three Western religions, three Eastern Religions and the religions of Africa. In the second half of the course, students will be required to read, Subverting Greed: Religious Perspectives on the Global Economy by Paul Kitter and Chandra Muzaffar to understand how various religious traditions understand and confront the issues related to globalization. Additionally, students will be required to read, Subverting Hatred: The Challenge of Nonviolence in Religious Traditions by Daniel Smith.
