Comments on Teaching and Learning at Xavier: As a faculty member and clinical pharmacist, most of my teaching takes place in a clinic setting with senior pharmacy students. When students go out into the clinics, drug stores, and hospitals they must be prepared to competently make drug therapy recommendations and answer questions posed by the client -- the patient. These expectations in new pharmacy settings can be intimidating. As a diabetes educator, I teach patients how to manage their disease and I prepare and teach students how to practice in this setting. I believe that exercising patience goes a long way and that it plays a major part in providing an atmosphere that's conducive for learning. This is my prescription for getting the best work from my students: Remember that students are human too. Add a lot of patience. Challenge the student daily. Mix with confidence builders as needed to yield excellent decision makers in order to competently practice pharmacy in any setting.
