Using Style Sheets

This is one of several on-line tutorials offered by the Center for the Advancment of Teaching.

PDF This site contains documents in the Portable Document Format (PDF), which you can download and print for your reading convenience. There are a number of viewers which you may use to display PDFs. We recommend the free Acrobat Reader by Adobe.

The following documents are available as PDF files (requires Acrobat Reader):

It's recommend that you download both documents and print them. Read through the first document and save it as a reference. The second document is a short step-by-step tutorial. Work through the tutorial, referring to the first document as needed.

The documents were last updated in June of 2000.

Bonus: Check out the Coffee Style Demo. Use the buttons at the bottom to navigate through various style sheets, all modifying the same HTML. You can also take a look at the interactive slidedeck gizmo used in the original workshop circa 2000. And finally, we have a similar interactive slidedeck from 2020 on "The Great Divorce Between Style and Content" — you'll need to use your arrow keys to navigate through the presentation.
