Signal Phrases and Parenthetical References to Sources Within the Paper

Remember:

The works cited page by itself is not enough in itself to give readers the information about sources that they need and to avoid plagiarism.

Within the paper itself, the writer must provide readers with precise information that refers them to the proper sources on the works cited page.

Provide readers with

  1. A signal phrase that announces that a quotation or paraphrase from a source listed on the works cited page is about to be included in the paper, and
  2. A parenthetical reference that gives at least a page number in parentheses that coordinates with an entry on the works cited page where readers can find the documentation of the source used in the paper.
