History of African Popular Culture

Taught by Dr. Steven J. Salm

This course examines the historical development of African popular culture forms, including music, dance, film, literature, and the visual arts, from the precolonial period to the present day. Drawing on historical texts, novels, films, and music we will explore select themes that will emphasize the vibrancy and diversity of African cultures and examine the ways in which popular culture can be used to explore important economic, political, and social issues in African history.

  • Pre-requisites: HIST 1030 and 1040
