Special Topics in Speech Communication

A seminar-type course that will focus on a specific issue or area within the field of speech communication. This semester will focus on strategies of persuasion. Furthermore, this course will survey of major communication theories that explain persuasive processes including how to change another person's attitudes and behaviors. We will apply persuasion theory to a variety of contexts, including relationships, organizations, legal campaigns, and the mass culture. This course is designed to make students more critical consumers and producers of persuasion. In exploring persuasion in a variety of contexts students will become better informed and more self-critical about their role as persuader and persuaded.
