Fundamentals of Public Speaking (Honors)

Taught by Kimberly Chandler; Shana Heinricy

In Spring 2008, the Department of Communications will offer two sections of honors public speaking. The course resembles the regular public speaking course, but also includes a service-learning project within the New Orleans community.

In Spring 2008, service-learning projects may include:

* a partnership with a New Orleans charter school that focuses on English as a Second language populations.

* a middle school mentoring collaboration that uses Hip Hop culture to develop multi-media student projects.

These projects allow students to put their public speaking training into practice in a real world context, while improving the educational experience of New Orleans Public School students. Students who have successfully completed this course have also been invited to present their service-learning experiences at campus, state, and regional conferences.

  • Pre-requisites: ACT of 24 OR SAT of 1090 AND high school GPA of 3.0
