Critiquing the Canon in Your Core Course
Using English as an Example

In this workshop, Christine Kwon will discuss how the Western Canon has shaped the entire English discipline, and the problematic nature of being the ‘other’ in a predominantly white, male tradition. We will investigate the trials one might face in critiquing a concept while using the same language and tools that have been used to bar criticism. The focus of this workshop will be on the importance of questioning the ‘canon,’ and not merely accepting it as a non-negotiable institution. Faculty will learn how they could go about critiquing a concept in their discipline, and how to apply it in a core course.
