I like to engage in what psychologists have recently termed <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cc.au.dk\/en\/recreational-fear-lab\" target=\"_blank\">recreational fear<\/a><\/em>. This is the fun of being scared. A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/4-classroom-lessons-from-haunted-houses\" target=\"_blank\">recent article<\/a> in the <em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/author\/sarah-rose-cavanagh\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Rose Cavanagh<\/a> applies this research to the classroom. She argues that there are four pedagogical lessons we can learn from haunted houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>We never go into haunted houses alone. <\/em>In times of anxiety and threat we tend to find safety in others. The same holds for the anxiety produced in learning environments. Creating collaboration opportunities with classmates and communal class environments can enhance learning.<\/li><li>P<em>leasurable arousal happens when we are scared, but not too scared<\/em>. Cavanagh calls this \u201cpleasurable disquietude,\u201d and it's the appropriately uncomfortable spaces in our classrooms and disciplines that allow students to progress to the next level in their learning.<\/li><li><em>Fear and motivation have physiological similarities.<\/em> As instructors we can harness student anxiety to move them forward and deepen their learning.<\/li><li><em>Finally, we grow stronger by facing our fears. <\/em>Students must confront challenges in the classroom in order to grow. So instructors need to provide appropriate challenges for them. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Cavanagh provides some <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/4-classroom-lessons-from-haunted-houses\" target=\"_blank\">nice examples<\/a> of what this might look like in our classrooms.
