{"id":2468,"date":"2013-11-21T10:10:21","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T15:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/?p=2468"},"modified":"2013-11-21T10:10:21","modified_gmt":"2013-11-21T15:10:21","slug":"help-students-research-on-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/help-students-research-on-the-internet\/","title":{"rendered":"Help Students Research on the Internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In an attempt to make students start working on a research project long before 24 hours from the due date, as well as discuss plagiarism and the pitfalls of research on the internet, I've been researching the internet myself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I checked into <a title=\"google alerts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\">Google Alerts<\/a>.\u00a0 I've been experimenting with setting up the searches and verifying the results.\u00a0 It's quite easy to begin using immediately.\u00a0 So I suggest that at the beginning of the course when discussing the syllabus, instructors take about 5 minutes to have the students set up a Google Alert on their mobile devices for each possible research topic they may wish to explore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For Google Alerts, there is very little to fill out and you can specify how often to receive notification that matches to your search have been found:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2477\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2477\" title=\"alertsblog\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/alertsblog.PNG?resize=300%2C273\" alt=\"Google Alerts is fast and simple to use\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Alerts is fast and simple to use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By having the students set up weekly alerts and seeing that they can limit their searches instead of being overwhelmed with a million hits, it is hoped that at least once a week (or however often they have set up the alert), they will be thinking about their research project throughout the semester rather than at the last minute.\u00a0 Happy searching!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an attempt to make students start working on a research project long before 24 hours from the due date, as well as discuss plagiarism and the pitfalls of research on the internet, I've been researching the internet myself.
