{"id":3432,"date":"2014-06-19T10:29:51","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T15:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/?p=3432"},"modified":"2014-06-19T10:29:51","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T15:29:51","slug":"geocaching-a-real-life-scavenger-hunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/geocaching-a-real-life-scavenger-hunt\/","title":{"rendered":"Geocaching:  A Real Life Scavenger Hunt!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">by Karen Nichols<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I've just returned from a <a title=\"distance learning administration conference\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westga.edu\/~distance\/dla\/\" target=\"_blank\">Distance Learning Administration<\/a> conference on <a title=\"jekyll island\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exploregeorgia.org\/city\/jekyll-island\" target=\"_blank\">Jekyll Island<\/a> in Georgia.  It's a small island that is part of the Golden Isles group and very green, ecofriendly and easily navigable on foot or bike.  I discovered there were over a hundred \"geocaches\" just on that small island and many of them were environment, nature and\/or ecology-themed.  Until recently, I didn't know about geocaching even though it's been in existence since 2000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What is <a title=\"geocaching\" href=\"http:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/guide\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Geocaching<\/a>?\u00a0 Geocaching uses GPS-enabled devices to play an outdoor treasure hunting game.\u00a0 It's international in scope and easy to play.\u00a0 Basic membership is free.\u00a0 Here's a quick introductory video:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"280\" height=\"158\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1YTqitVK-Ts?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jekyll Island is a sea turtle sanctuary and is home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/gstc.jekyllisland.com\/\">Georgia Sea Turtle Center<\/a> where the turtles are given medical treatment and the center offers educational exhibits and programming.  A few of the geocaches had the sea turtle as the theme.<\/p>\n<p>What a great way to get children excited about discovery and learning!
