{"id":3860,"date":"2014-09-15T13:50:59","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T18:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/?p=3860"},"modified":"2014-09-15T13:50:59","modified_gmt":"2014-09-15T18:50:59","slug":"best-practices-for-posting-video-announcements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/best-practices-for-posting-video-announcements\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Practices for Posting Video Announcements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Karen Nichols<\/p>\n<p>In the September 8, 2014 issue of <a title=\"faculty focus link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facultyfocus.com\/articles\/online-education\/building-community-creating-relevance-online-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty Focus<\/a>, Amy Erickson and Catz Neset offer in their article \"Building Community and Creating Relevance in the Online Classroom,\" several best practices for creating video announcements to post in Blackboard (or whatever Learning Management System you may be using).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to your students having more exposure to you as a \"real\" person speaking to them, video announcements can also be a presentation of material or virtual tour of the week's lesson, narrated by you.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the authors' formula for success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Provide an introduction each week and share your availability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Give feedback and answer questions from the previous week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Showcase exceptional student work from the previous week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Highlight the objectives of the coming week and any special preparation or required resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Connect your coursework to relevant current events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>**I would add to this list:\u00a0 Keep in mind that students may be using mobile devices to access Blackboard so you'll want to create your video announcement to be easily viewed on a smartphone or ipad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Video announcements are not limited to strictly online courses.
