While these were established for a face to face environment, I think we can adapt several of them to our online\/hybrid courses.<\/p>\n<p>A number of the formative assessments listed require defining, identifying objectives, explaining why a reading is important, etc.\u00a0 For these types of assessments, <a title=\"Blackboard how-to\" href=\"http:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/BlogsWikisJournalsTrainingDoc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Blackboard offers an array of discussion boards, wikis, journals, etc<\/a>.\u00a0 They can be set up for students to view other postings and comment, thus providing opportunities for dialogue and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Suggestion 20 is to create a collage using the themes from the current lesson.\u00a0 A word cloud can be used for this activity and it can be uploaded in a discussion board.\u00a0 <a title=\"wordle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordle.net\/create\" target=\"_blank\">Wordle<\/a> is commonly used, but here is one I created from <a title=\"tagxedo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tagxedo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tagxedo<\/a> (Also item 35 in this article)--can you tell the topic I chose?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5914 aligncenter\" title=\"tagxedo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/tagxedo.jpg?resize=200%2C200\" alt=\"tagxedo\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I've successfully used Item 45, Bio Poem, in my French classes.\u00a0 In my case, I used this idea for the students to practice using newly learned French vocabulary by describing themselves, but it can certainly be used to as a formative assessment check to make sure the students understand literary characters or historical figures.\u00a0 For those unfamiliar with the Bio Poem, here are the items to include:<\/p>\n<p>Line 1:\u00a0 First Name<\/p>\n<p>Line 2: 3-4 adjectives that describe the person<\/p>\n<p>Line 3:\u00a0 An important relationship<\/p>\n<p>Line 4: 2-3 things, people or ideas that the person loved<\/p>\n<p>Line 5: 3 feelings the person experienced<\/p>\n<p>Line 6: 3 fears the person experienced<\/p>\n<p>Line 7:\u00a0 Accomplishments<\/p>\n<p>Line 8: 2-3 things the person experienced or wanted to see happen<\/p>\n<p>Line 9:\u00a0 Person's place of residence<\/p>\n<p>Line 10:\u00a0 Last name<\/p>\n<p>Let's be creative ourselves!\u00a0 Complete this bio poem about yourself or a literary or historical figures and share with us in a post!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Karen Nichols Edutopia's 53 Ways to Check for Understanding offers several quick and easy activities for formative assessment.
