Creating a virtual presence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Karen Nichols<\/p>\n<p>In my <a title=\"previous blogpost link\" href=\"http:\/\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/take-a-deep-breath-and\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous blogpost<\/a>, I presented the benefits of vertically centering oneself by taking a long deep breath.  This brief exercise can be used for face to face scenarios but also as one is preparing for a virtual meeting or even to record\/video oneself for students.  So, the deep breath has been taken and we're ready for ... what exactly?\u00a0 How do we go about creating a virtual presence?<\/p>\n<p>I like this definition of virtual presence:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9429\" title=\"Ariel Group at Pearson CITE\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cat.xula.edu\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ariel-Group-at-Pearson-CITE.PNG?resize=300%2C223\" alt=\"Ariel Group at Pearson CITE\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This definition by the <a title=\"ariel group\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arielgroup.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ariel Group<\/a> (referenced in the previous blogpost as well) sets the stage for showing how they have adapted their PRES (being present) model to the virtual world.  The <a title=\"ariel group's conference presentation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pearsoned.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CITE_2015_ARIEL_GROUP_Virtual_Presence.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">vPRES (virtual presence) model<\/a> is outlined in their presentation at <a title=\"pearson's cite 2015 conference highlights\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pearsoned.com\/education-blog\/cite-2015-event-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pearson's CITE 2015 conference<\/a>.\u00a0 Here's a quick overview from their presentation:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>v<\/strong><\/span>irtually--Choose technology that supports your goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>P<\/strong><\/span>RESENT--Focus on the now. Be aware of what\u2019s happening in the virtual space; be flexible and adaptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>R<\/strong><\/span>EACHING OUT--Ask questions, use polling to obtain opinions.\u00a0 Reaching out is a great relationship builder.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>E<\/strong><\/span>XPRESSIVE--Alignment of message and physical appearance. Communicate with energy &amp; passion.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>S<\/strong><\/span>ELF-KNOWING--Be self-confident. Be prepared &amp; ready for virtual interactions.
