Betrayed by Judas's kiss, Jesus is arrested.
MK 14:43-45 "Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs and sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders. The traitor had given the crowd a signal: `The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him and take him away under guard.' As soon as Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus and said, `Teacher!' and kissed him. So they arrested Jesus and held him tight."
Comment: According to Mark, it is a "crowd...sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders" who arrest Jesus. Luke has Jesus addressing those who came to arrest him: "Then Jesus said to the chief priests and the officers of the Temple guard and the elders who had come there to get him... (LK 22:52)" The "temple guard" was the police force under the authority of the Jews. The synoptics clearly indicate that it is the Jews, not the Romans, who arrest Jesus; only John's gospel throws in some Roman soldiers with the Temple guard ("So Judas went to the garden, taking with him a group of Roman soldiers, and some Temple guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees... (JH 18:3)"
