Christian Parallels

Early Christian experiences and beliefs about the Eucharist or Communion have influenced the gospel accounts of the Last Supper.

JH 13:33 "[Jesus said,] `My children, I shall not be with you very much longer.'"

LK 22:19 "[Jesus said,] `Do this in memory of me.'"

Comment: The gospels have Jesus saying something like "Look, followers, I am not going to be around much longer. However, when I am no longer here, I want you to have a meal just like this one. When you re-enact this meal and remember me, I will be with you." Think like a first century Jew: what other meal was there which, during its re-enactment, one remembered remembered someone's presence and actually made that person present again? The Passover Meal, of course.
