Why, do you think, would the early church select some of these gospels and not others? Some have suggested that the gospels which were selected were done so because they were more developed. Some have suggested that those selected did not contain "spurious" material, e.g. the "Gospel of the Ebionites" has Jesus being a vegetarian and the "Infancy Gospel of Thomas" has Jesus performing miracles as a child. Some have suggested that the four gospels that we have today were selected to be in the Bible because of the importance of the four churches for which these gospels were written. Some have suggested that the ones we have today were selected because they were the ones used the most for readings in the communion services of the early churches. Perhaps this last suggestion is the most persuasive, but one also must remember that for Christians the work of the Holy Spirit is constantly guiding the church. All Christians -- Catholic, Lutherans, Baptist, Methodists, etc. -- accept the gospels attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as revealed books and these four gospels are found today in the various Bibles used by the different Christian denominations.
