Mark's Gospel, which was written around 67-70 C.E., was probably the first written. Matthew's gospel and Luke's gospel were both composed around 80 C.E. Although they were written independently, both the authors probably had a copy of Mark's gospel in front of them as they wrote. The results of this, you can predict. Imagine that you have a term paper to write in one of your classes, all students have the same topic, and you and another student independently go to the library, find, and use the same book as a source. There will be passages in your paper which will appear very similar to passages in your classmate's paper because you have the same topic and you are using the same source. This is the case with Matthew's gospel and Luke's gospel: they both have the same topic and they are both using the same source, Mark's gospel. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the "synoptic" gospels.
