The word "messiah" means "anointed one." The Greek work "Christos" (=Christ) is simply the Greek equivalent for "messiah" and it is used in the Bible as a synonym for "messiah" or "anointed one." So when one hears "Jesus Christ," "Christ" is not Jesus's family name as "Francis" is Dr. Norman Francis' family name. But this leads to the question: if the messiah was the anointed one, whom did the Jews annoint? Certainly they annointed dead bodies, but there were also live people who were anointed. Jews anointed kings.
