"Metanoia" really means something like "turn around," "turn around your ideas and being," "change your ideas, concepts, and expectations and when you change your preconceived ideas, you will also change your way of acting."
Matt. 11:16-17 "[Jesus said,] `Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the marketplace. One group shouts to the other, "We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!"'"
Comment: This beautiful short story in Matthew's gospel reveals Jesus's attitude to the Jews of his day. Of course, if Jesus regarded his fellow Jews to be "like" the children in this marketplace, one needs to know what the children were doing and why there are two groups, each of which seems to have a complaint. Jewish boys and girls played games called weddings and funerals. Some of the children are "sitting" and have not participated in the games. One can almost hear the complaint: "This games stinks. I'm bored!" The other group, the ones actively playing the game, tells the non-participants: "Hey, we did our part to make the game work -- the problem is with you: had you changed your attitude and joined in the game, the game would have worked." Notice that Jesus compares the Jews of his day to the children "sitting," namely to those whose preconceived ideas and attitudes prevented them from joining the others.
