Although the passion narratives are not history in all details, they are not "made-up" fanciful stories or fiction, like a novel. Remember that the kerygma included that Jesus died, was buried, was raised, and appeared to witnesses. And, after all, those who heard this early preaching wanted details concerning the death of Jesus -- this needed explaining.
