Preconceived Ideas of the "Messiah"

We know that the Jews of Jesus's day wanted political and religious freedom from the Romans. We also know that they were expecting a "messiah." The "messiah" was a figure with a particular function. What exactly was this function? Let us put the question another way. At the time of Jesus, were the Jews expecting a "divine" person? Were they expecting "the Son of God?" They were expecting a "messiah," -- this is true. But when the Jews were expecting the "messiah," were they expecting a "supernatural" being or a human?
