Time and the Kingdom

Jesus spoke of the kingdom as if it were sometimes a future event and sometimes a present event. There is then a certain tension or polarity of time and the kingdom: there is an aspect of the kingdom which is present, right here and right now, AND there is an aspect of the kingdom which is not here and now, but future.

Kingdom as Present

We have already seen the theme of the immediacy of the kingdom and the necessity to decide now. At one point Jesus even says that when you see the lame walk, the captive set free, and the poor having the good news preached to them that the kingdom has "overtaken" you. We shall see more of this theme when we look at the kingdom being "close at hand."

Kingdom as Future

Most Christians tend to think of the Kingdom of heaven as "heaven" -- another place that one reach, hopefully, at another time. Certainly in the prayer, Our Father, what do Christian pray about the kingdom?

MT 6:9-13 "Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honored; may your Kingdom come..."
