Why Were the Gospels Written When They Were?

If Jesus died around 30 C.E., why did it take forty years to write the first gospel? In addition to the work of the Holy Spirit, one can point to two other factors which help to explain the delay: the death of the eyewitnesses and the early Christians' expectations of the end of the world.
