Outside in the Literature Classroom: New Orleans, Pedagogy, and Social Responsibility

by Dr. Robert Azzarello

"Outside in the Literature Classroom: New Orleans, Pedagogy, and Social Responsibility" aims to rethink some of the old habits of traditional literary pedagogy by encouraging both professors and students to get outside the confines of the classroom — literally and figuratively.

In order to accomplish this objective, this project will redesign SUNO's existing "Introduction to Literature," a course that is required by most majors. In redesigning this course, the primary aim will be to put the theme of social responsibility in New Orleans front and center. Work on this project will assume throughout that an understanding of one's historical present is necessary in promoting one's sense of social responsibility, civic engagement, and ethical action.
