MASTERING PATIENT ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES VIA A HYBRID APPROACH TO PHARMACY SKILLS LAB II: THE VpSIM (VIRTUAL PATIENT SIUMULATION) MODEL

by Dr. Sara Al-Dahir

The feasibility of on-line or hybrid courses is being evaluated for the pharmacy curriculum. A hybrid patient assessment lab will allow for teaching and testing across different domains. This proposal reformats an existing course, Pharmacy Skills Lab II, to a hybrid course that prepares students simultaneously for real patient assessment as well as techniques as tested on the computer-based pharmacy licensure exam. The objective to be met is:

To prepare students for on-line assessment methods, as used in NAPLEX, by incorporating virtual, on-line patient assessment in the Pharmacy Skills Lab II.
Student engagement in on-line learning and testing will be met via the following methods:
All second year pharmacy students will participate in weekly Patient Assessment labs:
1. Didactic Instruction and in-lab practice: Students enroll in a weekly, patient assessment lab. Students are provided didactic instruction followed by a demonstration of patient assessment techniques with an opportunity to follow-up via practicing on student peers.
2. VpSIM (Vitual Patient Simulation http://decisionsiulatin.com/)Session: Students will then be required to log-in and complete an on-line, virtual patient case. Students can revisit the patient case as many times as they desire. Initial and final scores on the graded patient case will be evaluated weekly.
