INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE

by Dr. Robin Vander

To revise AADS 2000 (Introduction to African American History and Culture) course so that it meaningfully infuses environmentalism and sustainability in African American communities as a core component of instruction. Working with the 2015-2016 theme, "Sustainability Across the Curriculum," topics to be considered: exploring the intersections of race/class/environment and African Diaspora communities, histories and narratives of environmental activism in African Diaspora communities, and contemporary models for sustainability in African Diaspora communities. As AADS is an interdisciplinary field, the revisions include partnerships with two Xavier colleagues who are also incorporating sustainability into their courses and will visit my class sections as guest lecturers.
