On march 18, 1969, American planes began
"Operation Menu," a 14-month-long bombing of Communist
sanctuaries in Cambodia. Over 100,000 tons of bombs were
dropped, 4 times the tonnage dropped on Japan during World
War II. Supposedly, Congress did not learn of those secret
raids until April 1970.

My Lai massacre. In late 1969, the story broke that Army Lt.
William Calley had ordered the murder of over 200 Vietnamese
civilians in My Lai village in March 1968. Twenty-five
officers were charged with complicity in the massacre and
subsequent cover-up. Only Calley was convicted, but
President Nixon eventually granted him parole.
