political event:

On march 18, 1969, American planes began "Operation Menu," a 14-month-long bombing of Communist sanctuaries in Cambodia. Over 100,000 tons of bombs were dropped, 4 times the tonnage dropped on Japan during World War II. Supposedly, Congress did not learn of those secret raids until April 1970.

 

social events:


My Lai massacre. In late 1969, the story broke that Army Lt. William Calley had ordered the murder of over 200 Vietnamese civilians in My Lai village in March 1968. Twenty-five officers were charged with complicity in the massacre and subsequent cover-up. Only Calley was convicted, but President Nixon eventually granted him parole.

Movie industry in trouble due to affluent whites having fled to the suburbs, leaving scores of theaters in the central city standing empty. Focus begins to turn toward experimentation with black movies.

dance:

Arthur Mitchell became established as the world's best black classical dancer with the New York City Ballet. Founded his own Dance theater of Harlem in 1969.
