political event:

As dissatisfaction mounted among soldiers and the public against U.S. involvement in the Viet Nam war, the President announced the Nixon Doctrine in 1969 by which ground troops would be withdrawn while the U.S. escalated the air war and provided economic and military aid to South Viet Nam.


social events:

The Black Economic Development Conference met in Detroit in April 1969. Led by James Foreman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the conference issued a "Black Manifesto," calling upon the "White Christian Churches and Jewish synagogues in the United States and all other Racist Institutions" to pay $500 million in reparations and to surrender 60 percent of their assets to the conference to be used for the economic, social and cultural rehabilitation of the African American community.


drama:

James Earl Jones wins a 1969 Tony Award for his starring role in The Great White Hope.

If He Hollers Let Him Go (1968). Raymond St. Jacques plays a fugitive on the run from Georgia where he was wrongly convicted of raping a white girl. Eventually, he proves his innocence.
