The My Lai massacre (Pay particular attention to the "silent screams" that focus on such images call to mind). In late 1969, the story broke that Army Lt. William Calley had ordered the murder of over 200 Vietnamese civilians in My Lai village in March 1968. Twenty-five officers were charged with complicity in the massacre and subsequent cover-up. Only Calley was convicted, but president Nixon eventually granted him parole.

One criticism against the Viet Nam was is that given the number of African Americans in the United States Armed Forces, people of color from the U.S. were annihilating people of color in southeast Asia. Martin Luther King, Jr. began to speak out against the war, especially the disproportionate number of African Americans sent to Viet Nam and, in particular, on the front line of battle.
