Perspective:

Psychohistory can be regarded as study of the changing meaning of symbols. Often in United States history, developments or events, as well as symbols, are studied in tunnel vision (i.e., a symbol is a symbol is a symbol because...). Such a narrow approach to understanding components of history equates unto defining a word with a word. This module will operate on the premise that (1) as a visual and performing arts medium, certain paintings are replete with symbols; (2) the symbols in these select paintings serve as frames of reference to enable us to assess social and political expression which surfaces in developments pertaining to the civil rights movement from 1954-1970; (3) and these symbols can be paralleled with additional symbols in other visual and performing arts media to enable us to engage in interdisciplinary and interactive learning relative to understanding components of United States history.
