Time and Space

Time and space function as complex entities in the literary text describing the individual's various states-of-being,relationships to others, and physical relationships between the individual and the environment. In the three novels, time and space suggest a circularity of events having profound impacts on both the individuals and their surrounding communities.

Assignment:

  • In Sula Eva makes a conscientious decision to end Plum's life. Usingthe information on "time and space" how does Eva arrive at her decision? How does her decision reflect the individual's relationship to others and space?

  • In Their Eyes Were Watching God how is time constructed through the act of storytelling? How is actual time versus potential time depicted? How does the archetypal journey illustrate the concept of time in terms of traditional African belief systems?

  • Analyze the following "spaces" and explain how they construct community in each of the three novels. Particularly, explain how they suggest a community within a larger society.

    Sula: Eva's house,

Their Eyes Were Watching God: storefront,

    Meridian: Meridian's homes.

In addition to the physical spaces, consider the activities that occur in these locales how these activities reinscribe the notion of community.
